HSN (Harmonized System of Nomenclature) is an internationally standardized system to classify traded products. Under Indian GST, businesses must report HSN codes on invoices based on their turnover slab.
Up to ₹1.5 crore turnover: not mandatory. ₹1.5–5 crore: 4 digits. Above ₹5 crore: 6 digits required on all invoices.
HSN codes classify goods/products while SAC (Services Accounting Codes) classify services. Both determine applicable GST rates.
Under GST 2.0 (Sep 2025), primary slabs are 5%, 18%, 28%, plus 40% for luxury/sin goods. Some construction materials retain 12%. Essential items are Nil-rated (0%).
